2015 has been quite the year for commercials – but don’t be fooled by the commercial itself. It’s almost impossible to laugh at a commercial, and I’ll take every bit of it.
In the United States, we like to laugh at most commercials, but when it comes to comedy we are terrible. In the United Kingdom, we’re even worse.
Here in the US we like to laugh at commercials, but when it comes to comedy we are terrible. In the UK, being a comedian is not a difficult task. But to be funny, you have to be able to work something out. We joke because we feel the need to fill space with something funny, and that something is usually a joke.
In the US, to be funny you have to be able to work something out. It’s like a high school debate team, or an improv class. In the UK, the only time it’s really fun is when the teacher is a jerk with a sense of humor. You are not allowed to be funny, but you can still try.
We had a lot of fun with the commercials, from the hilarious “I’m just a comedy writer” to the less funny “I’m a comedian because I can’t be a writer” which is a bit like saying “you don’t need an English degree to be a comedian.” Most of the commercials seemed to be written to be a bit of a parody of themselves.
If you want to be funny you need to work on how you think and do, you have to build an audience and start with a joke, not with a joke that was just made up in your head. I think one of the best commercials we saw was an ad for the show Mr. Brainiacs which just happened to be written in the style of a commercial for a show called Starburst.
Funny commercials are just that, commercials. You can make them funny and still be effective by being funny in a way that brings people into a conversation with you. That is what makes them funny. I think that’s why people love watching them.
One of the best commercials we saw this year was when Comedy Central used a bunch of jokes from The Office and a bunch of jokes from The Office 2. It was a great parody of the Office and it was funny. A lot of the best commercials go beyond the joke and include a little bit of surprise or suspense.
A quick note to make things clear, we won’t be reviewing this one. We just liked it, and we would have liked it even more if it had been a bit funnier.
